Frequently asked
Why is a message not getting through?
Beamie needs line of sight, a steady aim and darkness. Hold both phones still, point the flashlight straight at the other camera, dim the lights, and try a slower speed — slower speeds reach further and survive shaky hands.
Why does an encrypted message take so long?
Light carries only a few bits a second. Encryption adds a fixed overhead to every message, so a short encrypted message takes about a minute where the same public one takes seconds. The app shows the real time before you send.
How do I share a Private Channel?
Create the channel, then show the other person its Channel Code — in person, on paper, or by a route you already trust. The code is never sent by light, so someone watching your flashes cannot learn it.
Can I use Beamie in an emergency?
Do not rely on it. A message can be missed entirely, and Beamie cannot summon help. In a real emergency, call your local emergency number.
What is free, and what does Pro add?
Free: every Quick Message including the safety messages with no limit, 20 other sends a day, unlimited receiving and decrypting, and one saved Private Channel. Beamie Pro is a one-time purchase that adds writing your own messages, unlimited sending, unlimited Private Channels and the games.
Does it work on iPad?
No. Sending needs a flashlight, which most iPads do not have, so Beamie is for iPhone only.
Reporting a bug
What you did, what you expected, and what happened instead. A screenshot is worth a paragraph. If the app crashed, say what you were doing at the moment it went.
