About the app

BeamieSend messages with your iPhone flashlight

Talk with light, no signal.

Beamie turns your iPhone's flashlight into a transmitter and its camera into a receiver. Point one phone at another, tap Send, and the message crosses the gap as a pattern of flashes. There is no Wi-Fi, no mobile signal, no pairing and no server involved — just line of sight.

Send in the open on the Public channel, or create a Private Channel and share its code in person. Messages on a Private Channel are encrypted with AES-256-GCM, so only people holding the code can read them. Play chess, checkers and tic-tac-toe with a friend, too.

Light is slow and honest about it: a short message takes seconds, an encrypted one closer to a minute, and the app shows the real time before you send.

What it does

  • Messages by light

The flashlight flashes, the other phone's camera reads it. Works with no network at all.

  • Private Channels

Encrypted with AES-256-GCM. Share the 24-digit Channel Code in person; it is never transmitted.

  • Quick Messages

Ready-made phrases and building-block words that send in the fewest flashes.

  • Delivery confirmation

Optionally keep sending until the other phone flashes a receipt back.

  • Games

With Pro: chess, checkers and tic-tac-toe with a friend.

  • Free to receive, always

Receiving and decrypting are never limited, and Beamie Pro is a one-time purchase, not a subscription.

What this app is, and is not

  • Beamie is for entertainment. Do not rely on it in an emergency, for navigation, or anywhere a failed message could put someone at risk. In a real emergency, call your local emergency number.
  • It needs line of sight, a steady aim and darkness, and a message can be missed without either phone knowing.
  • Private Channels encrypt what you say, not the fact that you are signalling. Anyone watching can see that you transmitted and roughly how long the message was. Beamie is not anonymous communication.
